From Forgotten to Found: The Joy of Giving Secondhand Treasures a New Home!

Have you ever picked up an old book and wondered who read it before you?

Or found a vintage toy that looked like it had once been someone’s favorite companion?

Every secondhand item has a story.

That’s one of the reasons I love thrifting so much. Behind every well-loved book, board game, stuffed animal, or vintage collectible is a history we may never fully know—but we get the privilege of continuing it.

At Whole Heartily, that’s what this journey is all about.

More Than Just “Used”

Sometimes the word used doesn’t seem to do these treasures justice.

I like to think of them as well-loved, well-traveled, and ready for a new chapter.

A child may have learned to read from that storybook. A family may have gathered around that board game every Friday night. A plush friend may have offered comfort through difficult days.

Now, those same treasures have the opportunity to become part of someone else’s story.

There’s something incredibly special about that.

I’m also deeply inspired by stories like The Velveteen Rabbit, Toy Story, and The Brave Little Toaster—tales that remind us that love gives objects meaning, and that being cherished is what truly makes something “real.”

Why I Choose Secondhand

People shop secondhand for many different reasons.

Some are searching for a favorite childhood toy they’ve never forgotten. Others want to stretch their budget while still finding quality items for their families. Some enjoy decorating with vintage pieces that bring warmth and character into their homes.

For me, it’s a little bit of everything.

I love the thrill of discovering something unexpected on a thrift store shelf. I love researching unusual collectibles and learning their history. Most of all, I love knowing that something which might otherwise have been overlooked gets another chance to be appreciated.

Every rescued item is one less thing headed for a landfill and one more opportunity to create new memories.

Preparing Each Treasure

One of my favorite parts of reselling happens after I bring an item home.

Every piece is carefully reviewed, gently cleaned when appropriate, photographed honestly, and described as accurately as possible. If an item has scratches, wear, or small imperfections, I believe in sharing those details so buyers know exactly what they’re receiving.

I want every package that leaves my home to feel like opening a thoughtful gift.

Whether it’s a children’s book, a vintage collectible, or a favorite movie on DVD, I hope it arrives ready to be enjoyed all over again.

The Best Part

The most rewarding moments don’t happen when I find a great deal.

They happen when I hear from someone who says:

“I’ve been looking for this for years.”

Or…

“My daughter has wanted this book forever.”

Or…

“This reminds me of my childhood.”

Those messages remind me that what I’m really sharing isn’t just an item.

It’s a memory.

It’s comfort.

It’s nostalgia.

It’s joy.

A Treasure Is Waiting

You never know what you’ll discover while shopping secondhand.

Maybe it’s the missing book to complete a collection.

A board game that brings everyone around the table again.

A stuffed animal ready for another bedtime adventure.

Or perhaps it’s something you didn’t even know you were looking for until it found you.

That’s the magic of secondhand treasures.

Sometimes they aren’t forgotten at all.

They’re simply waiting for the right person to find them.

Please visit my stores on Mercari, eBay and Vinted to see if there are any treasures waiting for you!

Thank You for Supporting Small

Whether you’re a longtime thrifter, a collector, or someone just beginning to explore the world of secondhand shopping, thank you for being here.

Every purchase from a small reseller helps keep wonderful items in circulation, supports a small business, and gives cherished treasures another opportunity to be loved.

I hope Whole Heartily inspires you to look beyond something’s age and instead see the stories, memories, and possibilities it still holds.

Because every forgotten treasure deserves the chance to be found again—and every new home begins with someone willing to see its value.

Happy treasure hunting!
